Fiesta de San Jordi
23-23 April 2009
(Annual)
Fiesta de San Jordi is celebrated in all countries that have him as a patron and most of them also have a fiesta on the 23rd of April, the day he died. In Spain everybody is going to Barcelona on that day to join in the celebrations. The tradition is that men are giving roses to women, wives or friends, and women give a book to men. This tradition resembles Valentine’s Day but is, however, less commercialised. The tradition is not yet that old and goes back to the beginning of the last century when people started honouring the death of William Shakespeare and Miguel Cervantes.
