Poets and writers from all over the world read to thousands during this huge book festival in Berlin''s city centre. Highlights include appearances by famous authors, poetry readings, concerts and film screenings. This festival offers a literary diversity in times of globalisation.
   
 

Japan Festival
14-16 November 2008
A taste of the Orient comes to Berlin, as the city hosts the annual Japan Festival. From sushi to kung fu, this celebration is dedicated to the many facets of Japanese art and culture.Highlights include Japanese martial arts, strategic board games like shogi (chess), as well as art forms such as ikebana (flower arranging), calligraphy, origami, ink painting, kimono art and Manga comics.
   
 

berlin biennale for contemporary art (dates not yet confirmed)

This year the 5th berlin biennale for contemporary art has the title "When things cast no shadow" and brings together artists from different generations, backgrounds and nationalities. The festival which was initiated by Adam Szymczyk and Elena Filipovic takes place day and night and tries to develop a feeling for contemporary accents of art.

Christopher Street Day (dates not yet confirmed)

The ‘Christopher Street Day (CSD)’ celebrations are seen as a sign of greater acceptance and tolerance among the wider general public. Berlin's scene is well established and varied and is considered by some of the estimated 300.000 gays and lesbians living in the city as the "Eldorado for Homosexuals".
