The tradition of Carnival is very much alive in Poland and is celebrated throughout 40 days before the Polish Lent. In the old days Carnival was seen as a welcoming relief from the dark and dreary days of harsh winter.

Topienie Marzanny

The Drowning of Marzanna is an old pagan tradition and a Slavic fashion to celebrate the end of winter. According to the custom Marzanna was a goddess which was offered grains after harvest in hope to ensure good crop the following year.

Anniversary of the Ghetto Uprising

The Anniversary of the Ghetto Uprising remembers the victims who rose up on the 19th of April 1943 and held off German troops for three weeks. People from all over the world come together and pray for the young Jews that died in the Uprising. Tributes are given and flowers laid down at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes.

Midsummer’s Eve or St. John''s Night which is known as ''Slaska Noc Swietojanska'' in Polish is a popular festival that is based on pagan traditions from pre-Christian times. It marks the longest day of the year and at the same time it is closely associated with nature and the hope for a good harvest.

Anniversary of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising

Every year on the 1st of August Warsaw remembers the victims of the failed Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Throughout the entire city commemorative events take place and create an extraordinary atmosphere. The most important people taking part in the celebrations are without doubt veterans of the Uprising.
