Flower Market
It is worth taking photographs of the colourful, abundant displays of flowers in this floating market near Muntplein. You can find garden herbs in pots, lilies and hydrangeas as well as the obvious tulips in Springtime. Some of the shops specialises in cacti or exotic plants, but most also sell tourist knick knacks such as wooden windmills, Delft tile fridge magnets and bright yellow clogs. Avoid the painted china bowls with dormant bulbs inside, these tend to produce dry dust rather than blooms.

Amstelveld Market
One of the best places to buy really cheap potted plants is the tiny Amstelveld market. Specialist growers bring their herbs and flowers straight from the nurseries, so this is also a good place to ask for horticultural advice. Plants are incredibly cheap here, but very good quality. In autumn you can find pots of chrysanthemums and vigorous lavender. There are some nice cafes nearby and as this weekly market is a lot quieter than in the centre of town, shopping here can be very pleasant.

Bloemenhandel Rinus
One of the cheapest places to buy cut flowers in Amsterdam is in a flower stall/covered shop near the Brouwerij Het Ij and eastern Windmill. For more than 20 years they have been selling quality blooms and can make some very pretty bouquets to order.
