There are many cafés in Athens, and a wide diversity of different kinds. Some are much like bars, while others are the classic Greek “kafeneion,” or coffee shop establishments. During the afternoon, when it is often very hot in the city, the natives tend to seek out a café or bar and settle down on a shady terrace for a while. You will find many people hanging out and talking or playing cards during these hours. Some cafés and bars are clearly intended as tourist establishments, while others are native hang-outs, and most are of course mixed. Bars feature traditional drinks like ouzo and Greek beers, but also serve a wide range of other drinks. You can find some excellent coffee at Greek cafés, as well as alcoholic drinks. Most cafés are open quite late, keeping similar hours to bars. The neighbourhoods known for having the best cafés and bars are Plaka, Thissio, Kolonaki and Kifissia.
