Abyssinia Café
This café has a down-at-heel look from the outside, but is actually quite a charming place. It has been recently restored, and features lots of dark wood with polished copper accents. The café is located on Abyssinia Square, and you can sit out on the terrace and watch the people go by. They serve coffee, tea, juices and many other beverages, and some delicious Greek food. Specials include feta with spices and garlic, mussels and rice pilaf, and meatballs. Appetizers and main courses are between € 5 – 15.

Café Escoba
A festive Mexican café with a friendly atmosphere, Escoba offers a wide range of drinks, snacks and meals. They have a variety of teas, coffee, juices and soda, as well as Tex Mex food such as burritos, quesadillas and guacamole. You can also get American fare like burgers, hot dogs and regular sandwiches. They take pride in their coffee here and offer a selection of different gourmet blends.

Oinos Café
This café has a nice relaxed atmospere, and is a popular hang-out with the locals. Located on the main square of the Plaka, it is close to many attractions in the city centre. Soda, beer and excellent coffee are the main drinks here, and they also have ouzo. If you order drinks, you’ll get a little bowl of peanuts to go with them, or you order a snack. There is a lovely shady terrace for summer, and they have a cozy fire going in the winter.

Mandarino
A simple and casual café with a fastfood appearance, Mandarino offers some of the best expresso in the city, and other coffees at inexpensive prices. There are many seats outside, and if you sit here you will get a real feel for a typical bustling and interesting Athens street. In addition to drinks, they serve some great traditional food, including tiropitas, pizzas and spanakopitas. They also bake their own cakes and other desserts, which are consistently delicious.

Diorofo
This is a combination café/restaurant located in the city market, with a café on the ground floor and the restaurant above. The building is an old, fancy neoclassical structure, and adds charm to the ambiance. There is a nice terrace and also a bar inside. The coffee is very good, and they feature a wide range of other drinks including specialty teas, wines, ouzo, fruit juices, soda and more. They offer great snacks along with the drinks, and plenty of more substantial food is available as well.

Café Dioscouri
This café is located right in the heart of Athens’s flea market, which makes for interesting and lively surroundings. Sunday is the big market day, so if you come then expect it to be very crowded. It is a perfect spot to people watch, however, and a nice place to take a break from perusing the many market stalls. The coffee is excellent, and so are the various homemade snacks and desserts.

Café Sikinos
The incredibly central location of this café, right in the thick of the city’s main sights, means that it has a lively and international atmosphere and is a great place to sit and watch the people go by. It’s a bit overpriced by Greek standards, but still quite reasonable compared with most European cafés. They have a wide selection of drinks, snacks and light meals, and their ice cream is particularly good.

Balthazar
A popular bar with Athenians of all ages, Balthazar is located in a neoclassical house and has a lovely walled-in courtyard area where the main lounge is found. It offers a nice respite from the hot, loud city, and is full of lush greenery, including palm trees. The décor is simple and understated and the music is subdued. Drinks and food here are very good, but expensive. They serve Greek and Mediterranean specialties, featuring seafood such as octopus and grilled swordfish, as well as lamb, greenbeans with mussels, and much more.

Parko
This café/bar is trendy and popular with a vibrant and festive atmosphere. There is a DJ playing music every night, and the style of tunes varies from night to night. They feature some wonderful Greek wines, as well as many other local drinks, and there is also a whisky bar. They even sell cigars from their “cigar humidifier.” There is a restaurant area where you can have a nice romantic dinner, and they serve Greek food as well as some dishes from Cuba, India and Spain. In addition to alcoholic drinks, they offer an astonishing 32 flavours of hot chocolate, as well as many different kinds of coffee and tea. All the tables offer a great view of the surrounding park.

Bee
A gay-friendly bar, there are always many straights as well, and the crowd tends to be fairly young and fashionable. The music is upbeat and usually pop, rock or latin. The bar stays open late, and gets quite crowded on the weekends. You will find all the usual drinks here as well as some very good cocktails. You can order snacks, but there isn’t much substantial food.

Soul Garden
A popular bar with a dance floor, Soul Garden is a hip and trendy place to hang out. The atmosphere is quite friendly and relaxed, however. They have one of the most beautiful garden terraces you will find anywhere, lit with lanterns after dark. They serve a wide selection of drinks and specialize in sophisticated cocktails. You can also get food, and the options range from the traditional to the exotic. The dance floor usually becomes active around 1 am.

Stavlos
In the 19th century, this building used to be the royal stables, and is now an entertainment complex including art exhibits, a café, and movie screenings as well as a popular bar. The bar has a nice courtyard and a restaurant area, and is frequented by people of all ages. There is also a dance floor. Many interesting events are held here each week, such as concerts, film screenings and open mic nights.

Central
This chic bar is open during the day and long into the night, and draws a pretty sophisticated and well-to-do crowd. The décor is very elegant, and the atmopshere subdued and refined. There is pretty much every kind of drink you could wish for, as well as a selection of snacks and other food, and their specialties are cocktails and sushi. The place is most lively in the evening when the Kolonaki club scene picks up.
