Athens has a varied cultural life, and one made unique by its union of ancient traditions with the avant-garde. One of the city’s hotbeds of cultural activity is known as the “Technopolis,” an area that has been transformed from industrial wasteland to a bustling array of art shows, galleries, concerts, other performances and night clubs. A number of international art and music festivals take place at this location throughout the year. Throughout the rest of Athens, there are cultural delights everywhere, including a excellent museums, music venues for almost every kind of music imaginable, dance performances, as well as a number of interesting temporary exhibitions. Many performances, especially theatre and opera, are held in ancient venues that have witnessed some of the first operas and plays ever performed. Sometimes these venues are little more than ruins, and are used for open air concerts in the summer. These kind of locations add great character and local flavor to worldclass performances.
