Athens has a varied cultural life, and one made unique by its union of ancient traditions with the avant-garde. One of the city’s hotbeds of cultural activity is known as the “Technopolis,” an area that has been transformed from industrial wasteland to a bustling array of art shows, galleries, concerts, other performances and night clubs. A number of international art and music festivals take place at this location throughout the year. Throughout the rest of Athens, there are cultural delights everywhere, including a excellent museums, music venues for almost every kind of music imaginable, dance performances, as well as a number of interesting temporary exhibitions. Many performances, especially theatre and opera, are held in ancient venues that have witnessed some of the first operas and plays ever performed.
