National Archaeological Museum
This rich and varied museum has one of the best collections of Greek art and artifacts in the world, and is one of the most popular of Athens’s museums. The collections reflect all of the different cultures that have flourished in Greece, with an emphasis on very early art works. Some of the highlights include Mycenae treasures unearthed from archaeological sites, a vast array of sculpture including the earliest known Greek figurines from 2,000 BC, and frescoes from the island of Santorini. The museum is very large, and it will be impossible to absorb it all in one visit. The museum itself was designed by a German architect, Ernst Ziller, in 1889.

There are some famous and striking works here, such as Eugene Delacroix’s Massacre of Chois, many other paintings, some historic costumes, and assorted martime artifacts. Important wars or battles that have special exhibits include the Battle of Lepanto, World War II and the Battle of Crete. There is a nice gift shop on the way out where you can find unique souvenirs.

Archaeological Museum
Another museum focusing on archaeological artifacts, this one also has much to offer, and focuses on bronze works and a slightly later period. It is located a bit outside of the city centre, which makes it much less visited than other museums, and is therefore almost never crowded. The exhibits include four of the very rare bronze statues that have survived the classical period. Besides these four, there are only a handful throughout the entire world. The statues are life-size and exquisitely crafted, dating from the 6th-4th centuries BC. The statue of Athena is particularly lovely, and she is wearing a unique helmet decorated with griffins and owls. Other exhibits display Mycenaen chariot figurines, musical instruments and funerary monuments.

Benaki Museum
An extensive art museum with over 20,000 works, here you can experience Greece’s entire history through art. The Benaki is the oldest private museum in Greece, established in 1926 by a wealthy native family. They played an important role in the preservation of Byzantine artifacts, at a time when other archaeologists were destroying these in order to access more ancient objects buried underneath. The collections in the museum are presented chronologically from the ground floor upward, and run the whole gamut from prehistory to the modern state. In addition to artifacts and artworks, you will also find interesting exhibits such as a recreation of a Macedonian living room and a collection of costumed mannquins. The grandeur of the Benaki home gives an added elegance and appeal to the museum.

The location is a grand and spacious neoclassical building, and includes artifacts from over 5,000 years of Cycladic history. There are hundreds of items from the Bronze Age, featuring a variety of interesting and mysterious marble figurines.
