Although Bruges is a comparatively small city it has a rich cultural program. Since 2002 when Bruges became Capital of Culture the Concert hall (Concertgebouw) is Bruges most important music venue where people can visit concerts of classical and contemporary music, ballet, opera or other artistic performances. Also theatre has an important status. The Cultural Centre operates seven locations like the City Theatre or the De Werf Art Centre. Furthermore there are several art galleries and about 14 municipal museums that exhibit a wide range of subject among them the traditional heritage of Flanders. Particularly known are the Groeningmuseum, the Chocolate Museum and the Diamond Museum. But there are many small precious locations. Especially the small backstreets and the streets around the canals often reveal small artistic places and numerous privately-operated attractions. Bruges also has two cinemas that are showing mainly mainstream movies in their original version with Dutch/ French subtitles.
Throughout the year there are many cultural and artistic festivals such as the Holy Blood Procession which takes place on Ascension Day. Music festivals, dance performances or film presentations are not uncommon. There is even a festival dedicated to the sweet temptation: chocolate!
