Restaurants

Bruges cuisine is strongly influenced by the French and has a heavy gourmet touch. The city has over 200 excellent restaurants, fancy lunch locations and cosy coffee bars where you can enjoy a stunning meal or just have a piece of the delicious chocolate variations. Apart from regional cuisine there are many international restaurants offering food from India to Italy. As Bruges is quite well arranged it is easy to find a restaurant that suits your taste and your purse. There also many snack bars and “constructions” selling Vlaamse Frieten or waffles which can be eaten in the streets.

Cuisine
Bruges lays high culinary standards with a cuisine that is rather big than fine. This, basically, means that big portions go along with high quality food and certain unpretentiousness. Belgium has some delicious dishes that are characteristic for the country. Name French fries which are not French but Belgian, hence the name Vlaamse Frieten. They can be eaten with different sauces or accompany a dish with mussels. Other typical Belgian dishes are “Stoemp” meaning mashed potato with other vegetables, often served with sausage, "Chicon Gratin/Gegratineerd witloof", Belgian endives baked in melted cheese or "Vlaamse stoofkarbonaden" (Carbonnades Flamandes) which is a Flemish beef stew, similar to the French Beef Bourguignon but made with beer instead of red wine. And that is what Belgians are famous for: beer. Although the country is comparatively small, the variety of beer is astonishing. Fruity flavoured, dry, white or dark, Belgians have it all. And even if you are not a beer drinker it is a must to at least try. Belgians are also famous for their sweets, especially waffles and chocolate. Waffles are usually eaten as a street snack and can be bought natural, with wiped cream or fruits. And who has not heard about Belgian pralines. About 170.000 tons of this sweet sin are produced every year and sold by more than 2000 shops all over the country. The variety of chocolates and pralines leave no wishes open. Even today there are many chocolatiers that make their pralines by hand. Sublime chocolate confections with sculptured forms and textures that are filled with extraordinary flavours.
