“The Venice of the North”as Bruges is called is the crown jewel of Belgium. The medieval city centre is so well preserved as nowhere else in Europe. This picturesque town of Bruges is easily manageable by foot as the main sights are all concentrated in a small area. There are two squares which present many architectural features of the past. The Markt Square used to be the commercial heart of the city with many sights close to each other. The main monument is without doubt the belfry tower and the cloth hall. On the Northern site of the square is the Provincial Court which was used as storage for the load of ships. The second square is the Burg Square which is the location of the Basilica of the Holy Blood from the 12th century.
The Burg was and is still today the administrative heart of the city. Different architectural styles from the past are unified in one location; the beautiful gothic hall from 1376 which was the first monumental town hall in the Low Countries, the renaissance styled Old Civil Registry, the former Court of Justice in neo-classical style and the Baroque Deanery which used to be the house of the Deans of the St. Donatius Church. Apart from all the famous buildings and sights that are placed around the two squares, Bruges offers some nice medieval looking houses, romantic canals and a gorgeous park.
