Brussels is a great city for bars, with a great variety of them all over the city. Belgium is known for its tasty strong beers, and in Brussels you find many local brews as well as imported ones. There has been a recent trend for Irish pubs, and several have sprung up around the city, as well as some American-style bars. There are also many cafés, from simple sidewalk coffee shops to elegant gourmet bakeries serving snacks and drinks. The biggest concentration of cafés and bars is in the trendy downtown area, near to Place St. Géry and the Grand Place. Most of the gay bars are found near to the Grand Place. Drinks in Brussels are very affordable in the ordinary establishments, though of course much pricier if you go to very trendy places. As you will probably notice, Belgian beers are much stronger than beers in most other places, often with an alcohol content of 12%. Some unique varieties to try include the dark Trappist ale brewed by monks and Iambic beers lightly flavoured with fruit, which come in bottles with corks.
