Café de l’Opéra
This popular café/bar is located right across from the Théâtre de la Monnaie. It is always bustling before and after shows there, and some people even pop in during the intermission. It is an old establishment with a dignified, antique atmosphere. It is situated in the middle of a busy shopping district, and is an ideal place to stop for some refreshment after shopping or wandering around the city. They have a beautiful terrace open during the warm months, and their snacks and drinks are delicious year round.

Falstaff Gourmand
This is a hip café and restaurant decorated in the art nouveau style. It has been in business since 1903, but became most popular and well-known in the 80s. Located next to the Bourse, it is a trendy place to hang out, frequented by the young and sophisticated. Some of their specialties are their “half en half,” a mixture of sparkling wine and dry white wine served in a champagne glass, and traditional Belgian beers such as gueuze. They also offer a good selection of food, featuring creative variations on Belgian and French cuisine.

La Crèmerie de la Vache
This is a charming café in the centre of the city, located just off Avenue Louise. It is small and cheery with lots of light and attractive tiled walls. They serve excellent tea and coffee as well as a wide selection of hot and cold snacks. It is a good place to stop for a light lunch, and the regular options include soups, sandwiches, salads, cakes and tarts.

This intricately decorated café is all about coffee. There is a huge coffee roaster in the store, and in the back there are sacks of coffee beans from all over the world, labelled with little flags. In addition to serving delicious coffee (and a few teas as well) they sell coffee, both beans and pre-ground, as well as coffee-making paraphenalia.

Het Dagelijks Brood/ Le Pain Quotidien
This bakery/café has branches in Paris and New York, but was originally a Belgian invention. It is known for having the best bread in Brussels, and people come here from all over the city to enjoy their freshly baked delicacies, made by artisans in the traditional way. You can stop by just to buy baked goods or sit down for a drink and something to eat. They serve a variety of snacks, sandwiches, salads, desserts and drinks. Their cheese platter is particularly good, and goes great with their fresh bread.

Wittamer
This pastry shop and café has been a family business since 1903, and is still run by the Wittamers. They now have five other branches throughout the city of Brussels, but the original location is listed below. They serve a variety of delicious homemade food, specializing in desserts such as ice cream, chocolate, pasteries and candy. You can buy these items (and more) from the shop, or sit down to eat. They also have good tea and coffee and a number of fruit juices. Prices are on the high side, but reflect the distinctive quality of the products.

Celtica
This is a lively and welcoming Irish pub that has become extremely popular during its few years in business. One of many Irish pubs in the city of Brussels, it distinguishes itself by its dancefloor and live music. The floor is always open, and there are also some regular scheduled times for traditional Irish set dancing, usually on Thursday evening. You can drink Guinness and other typical Irish beverages here, as well as enjoy a variety of snacks.

James Joyce Irish Pub
This was the first Irish pub in Brussels, established in 1989, and has certainly started a trend. The James Joyce remains one of the most popular pubs in the city, however, and is known for its good traditional Irish food. In the warmer months the garden is open for eating and drinking, and provides a lovely respite from the bustle of the city. Guinness and Irish cider are some of the most popular drinks here, and meals are served for lunch and dinner. There are a number of salads and sandwiches, as well as a featured Irish stew and some tasty smoked salmon.

A la Mort Subite
The name of this bar means “sudden death” and comes from a game of dice that the regulars used to play. It is also the name of one of the beers you can order here. This bar is popular with all kinds of people, and is a regular hang out for locals including students, businessmen and artists. The building is old and so is the décor, with paintings, old photographs and stained glass. It is a scenic and atmospheric place to eat, drink and relax, though the staff may be a bit brusque at times. Traditional Belgian beers are the specialty, including gueuze, Iambic, faro, kriek and abbey beers like Chimay, Maredsous and Grimbergen.

The Wild Geese
This pub is a favourite place for locals to unwind after work and is also popular with tourists. Spacious and rustic, it is filled with wooden tables and benches and has a bar where you can sit as well. Belgian and Dutch beers are featured as well as a number of imported ones, and snacks are available until late at night. Friday and Saturday nights get very lively, and live jazz and Irish music are featured on Wednesday nights.

The Crow
This is a sports bar with a friendly atmosphere and is a great place to watch sporting events on TV. Meals are served, both snacks and more substantial fare, and the drinks are good and reasonably priced. The menu features American Louisiana-style food, with Buffalo wings being one of the most popular items. They are served however you like them, from mild to extremely spicy. There are also a variety of salads and seafood. The bar also features a number of good wines and has more than thirty to choose from.

Conway''s
This American bar is located in a neighbourhood with many cinemas, and is a good place to stop either before or after a movie. It is a popular bar with students as well as some of the rowdier locals, and has a tendency toward loud music and a continuous party atmosphere late at night. During the day it is more subdued, however. They have a nice terrace and serve some typical American pub food like hamburgers and ribs. There is also have a television broadcasting sporting events.

O’Reilly’s Irish Pub
Yet another Irish pub in Brussels, this one is part of a chain, with locations in Amsterdam and Heidelburg. This pub is the biggest sellar of Guinness in the city and is always lively with a festive atmosphere. All kinds of people come here, but it is particularly popular with a young crowd. There are a number of theme eveings organised wach month, and St. Patrick’s Day is always a big event. In addition to nice Irish ales and other drinks, they also serve tasty meals and snacks. There is a terrace on the pub’s upper level overlooking the Bourse that is a great place to people watch.
