’t Kelderke
This restaurant serves traditional Belgian food and is located on the city’s main square. Situated in the brick cellar of a 17th century house, it is filled with long wooden tables and decorated in a rustic style. They serve distinctive local specialties such as blood sausage, stoemp, Flemish beef stew, boudin sausages, rabbit in Brussels beer and platters of Zeeland mussels. Though located in a touristy district, this restaurant is frequented by just as many locals as tourists. Prices are very affordable, with all main courses being under € 20. Credit cards are accepted.

Au Stekerlapatte
A down-to-earth yet chic bistro, this establishment is run by film producer Daniel van Avermaet. It attracts a fairly young clientele, as well as many business people and tourists. During film festivals many of the stars come to eat here. The food is a mixture of Belgian and French elements and includes many traditional dishes as well as unique specialties of the chef. The steak and spare ribs are very popular, and other options include cassoulet, grilled pig’s trotters and black pudding with caramelized apples. It is open late, and located near to the Palace of Justice.

Amadeus
Located in a former sculptor’s studio, this restaurant maintains a quirky and artsy atmosphere. It is cosily situated at the back of an ivy-covered cobbled garden square, and its décor is unique. The walls are painted black and there are several old stone statues from churches interspersed among the candlelit tables. The food is primarily Belgian, and the house specialties include beef carpaccio, vegetable tart, tagliatelle with salmon, and carmelised spare ribs. On Sundays they host a popular self-service brunch. The price of a dinner is usually between € 20 – 30. Reservations are recommended.

Aux Armes de Bruxelles
One of the most popular restaurants in the neighbourhood, the old and stately Aux Armes de Bruxelles will not disappoint. The food is traditional Belgian and oriented toward high-quality seafood. Oysters and mussels are among the specialties, and the cod in mussels sauce is particularly good. A number of meat and poultry dishes are also served, prepared in almost every conceivable way. Founded in 1921, the restaurant has been frequented by Laurel & Hardy, King Leopold III, Danny de Vito and Placido Domingo. It contains three separate rooms, the Rotonde, the Brasserie and the Bodega and can seat up to 160 guests. Home delivery is also an option.

Au Vieux Saint-Martin
This is a hip and artsy restaurant and has become popular with the local beau monde. The local Belgian food is prepared according to time-honoured traditions and a short but well-selected menu offers truly delicious dishes. The owner is an expert on wine and serves reasonably priced and surprisingly good wines. The décor is heavily influenced by the 70s, and there are a number of original modern artworks on the walls, including works by Alechinsky. Prices average between € 25 – 35 for dinner, but one is also welcome to stop by for a cup of coffee or dessert. Reservations are not accepted.

Le Prévôt
This charming and elegant restaurant is run by the chef, Alexandre Masson. The food is Belgian and French with some personal flairs, and is of renowned quality. The seafood and chicken dishes are particulary good. All receive a warm welcome here, and the cosy restaurant has been decorated by Masson’s wife. Ancient tiles on the floor and walls are combined with antique mirrors and warm colours accentuated by candlelight. Prices average just over € 30. Reservations are recommended.

In ’t Spinnekopke
Opened in 1762, this restaurant has a long history and is atmospheric and charming. Its name translates to “In the Spider’s Little Head,” and many of the wooden benches and tables have been here since this was a coach inn in the 18th century. Currently owned by Juan Rodriquez, author of several books about cooking with beer, he shows off his talents here with an extensive menu of traditional Belgian food. The beer list is extensive with over 100 artisanal beers, and the waiters will recommend the best beers to go with your food. Portions are very generous. Prices range from around € 20 - 40.
