Budapest is well known for its rich history in music and the other arts. The city has a vibrant concert scene, with diverse music on offer including traditional Hungarian, folk, classical, jazz, rock, and more. Two of the most famous Hungarian musicians of the 19th century were Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály who collected many folk songs and helped to preserve the vanishing Hungarian folk culture. Their work has influenced the modern Hungarian music scene, with its lively and popular folk traditions. Tickets for most concerts in Budapest can be obtained in advance at the Nemzeti Filharmónia office, on V Vörösmaty tér.
Budapest also has some wonderful museums, and there are more than 60 in the city. They range from typical art museums to avant-garde exhibition spaces and museums with unusual themes. There is an Underground Railway Musuem and a Museum of the Ambulance Service, for example. It would be well worth your while to check out one of the more eccentric museums, as they are usually very interesting and have a quirky charm.
If you wish to attend a play, there are some theatres performing in English, and luckily for tourists, only a few of the movies shown in Budapest theatres are in Hungarian. Many are from America or the US, and are shown with Hungarian subtitles. English listings of cultural events can be found in the Budapest Week publication, also available at www.budapestweek.com.
