Vígszínház
Elegant and grand, the Vígszínház theatre is the most beautiful and prestigious in Hungary. It seats over 1,000 people and presents a wide variety of plays, specializing in modern European and American plays. Popular playwrights whose works are put on here include Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Friedrich Dürrenmatt. This venue is also used for musicals, such as the ever-popular West Side Story and an adaption of Jungle Book. All performances are in Hungarian.
Merlin International Theatre
The Merlin theatre is special and popular with tourists, as it is the only theatre in Budapest with regular performances in English. It is located in downtown Pest and has gained quite a reputation for the quality of its thought-provoking and occasionally avant-garde productions. The performances are often staged with minimal costumes and props, leaving the actors to evoke the scenes on their own. There are two stages within the theatre, as well as a bar where people gather after the shows.
Nemzeti Szinhaz (The National Theatre)
This theatre opened recently, in 2002, and is located in one of the new cultural centres of Budapest. It puts on both Hungarian and international plays and musicals, but all performances are in Hungarian. Some consider this the best place to see Hungarian plays.
