Aranyszarvas
The name of this restaurant means “golden stag,” and refers to a famous Hungarian folk legend. It is located near the centre of Buda, but in a quieter area. The food comes in generous portions with a variety of garnishes, and features dishes such as wild boar with horseradish, pheasant, and venison with mushrooms and red wine. It is the perfect place to come to try some traditional wild game recipes. There is always a nice selection of desserts and some good Hungarian wines as well. Credit cards are accepted.

Bagolyvar
This restaurant is a branch of Gundel, which is probably the most famous restaurant in Budapest. Both Gundel and Bagolyvar are run by the same owner, and Bagolyvar is more reasonably priced and homey. It features an all-female staff who make home-cooking recipes that owner George Lang remembers from childhood. This means that the food is simple and delicious, featuring salads, soups, stews, and fish dishes. A ring of Hungarian bread comes free with all orders. Reservations are recommended. The average cost for a meal is around 2500 Fr, and credit cards are accepted.

Kulacs
A traditional Hungarian restaurant, Kulacs is known for having been a favourite haunt of pianist Rezso Seress, who died in 1968. He wrote some hit songs such as “Gloomy Sunday,” sung by blues singers like Billie Holiday. The restaurant pays hommage to him with a plaque, and otherwise the decor is rustic in character. Some of the specialties here include chicken paprikas and catfish in a special sauce. On certain nights a gypsy band entertains the guests with lively melodies. The average cost here is around 2000 Fr.

Tabani Kakas
This is a cheerful restaurant in Buda with a friendly and intimate atmosphere. It is popular with tourists, as it offers excellent examples of Hungarian cuisine. Some of the featured dishes include Hungarian chicken stew, sholet beans with smoked ribs and goose liver, and a variety of soups. After 6 pm, a live pianist provides the music. Expect to pay around 2200 Fr for a meal. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

Lugas
This restaurant is aptly named, as “lugas” means a leafy arbour, and in the warm weather, you enter under a beautiful trellis covered in flowers and leaves. The food here as an excellent reputation, which it occasionally doesn’t live up to. The atmosphere is relaxing, however, and the food is consistently good, if not as brilliant as one is lead to believe. There are are a variety of nice starter salads and appetizers like smoked salmon and quail’s eggs. Main dishes feature fish such as fillet of sole and steak in Sichuan sauce. There is a good selection of wines as well. The average cost is around 3500 Fr. Credit cards are accepted.

Udvarhaz
This restaurant is located in a stunning location, on top of one highest hills in Budapest. Visitors are treated to a great view down over Buda, and you can see the Danube from the terrace. The food is very good as well, featuring traditional Hungarian meat and fish dishes, as well as lighter fare in the form of soups and salads. Credit cards are accepted. Most meals average around 3500 Fr.
