Al Horreya
This well-known café is something of a Cairo landmark, though it has seen better days. The once-grand 1930’s building is deteriorating, but the ambience within is always lively and interesting, making this a popular café with the locals. There is usually a group playing chess and smoking a sheesha pipe in one corner, while the artistic intellectuals congregate in another. This is one of the few traditional cafés in Cairo that serves beer. Tea, coffee and sodas are the other main drinks on offer, as well as a variety of snacks.

This is an opulent café that has recently been restored to its former grandeur with spacious rooms, wood panelling, red velvet upholstery and chandeliers. It used to be known as a literary hang-out, but now attracts a more general public. There is an impressive expresso bar on the upper level and a regular bar on the lower. Local Egyptian beers and wines are served, as well as imported ones for slightly higher prices. Snacks and a variety of light meals are offered, though most are not particularly noteworthy.

Cap d’Or
This bar is well-furnished but definitely on the seedy side. It is worth a visit if you want to experience a typical Egyptian bar and mix with the locals, for there are always a variety of colourful characters. Local beer and liquors are served at cheap prices, as well as some imported ones. The snack dish given free with the drinks is tasty and filling, but is basically all that’s on offer by way of food.

Daily 12 pm - 1 am

31 Abdel Khaliq Sarawat Street
Cairo
