Egyptian Museum of Antiquities
This is one of the finest museums in the world, offering a fascinating glimpse into Egyptian history and culture. The exhibits cover the history of ancient Egypt over a period of 50 centuries, from the earliest dynasties to the Roman era. There is so much to see at this museum that it is somewhat overwhelming, and perhaps best to concentrate on only one floor. The most spectacular collection is the one centering around the young pharoah Tutankhamun. It includes hundreds of treasures from his tomb as well as his famous solid gold death mask. There is also a Royal Mummy Room and a room of Greco-Roman mummies which includes animal mummies. Then there are a variety of galleries displaying art works, jewelry, textiles and other artifacts, most of which were found inside of tombs.

Certain galleries, such as the one focusing on the Mamluk period, also include inlaid furniture, glass works and enamelled lamps. Abdeen Palace Musuem
The grand palace that houses this museum was built in 1863 and served as a royal palace until 1952 when the reign of the monarchy ended and it became the home of the president. In the 1980s, president Hosni Mubarak decided to turn it into a museum focusing on weapons and medals. The galleries chart the development of weapons through the ages, and display a wide range of knives, cannons and guns, as well as more unusual inventions for killing. The medal displays become rather monotonous, but show important awards to the royal family as well as many Egyptian celebrities. The palace has now been extensively restored, and is interesting to explore as a building as well as for the collections.

Coptic Museum
This musuem displays the world’s largest collection of Coptic art, from the period AD300-1000. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden in what used to be the Roman fortress of Babylon-in-Egypt. The collections are made up of both secular and religious artifacts and include sculptures, carved ivory, textiles, papyrus scrolls with text from the Gnostic gospels and a variety of paintings. The exhibits are organized in chronological order. The rooms themselves are ornate and decorated with carved wooden screens, fountains and painted ceilings.
Beit El-Sennari
This museum is part of a centre for the applied arts, and includes works from Pharonic times to the present. There are dazzling handicrafts of all sorts, such as textiles, ceramics, glassware, carpets and silkscreens. The museum is located in an 18th century townhouse that used to belong to one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s men.
