National Cultural Centre/Opera House
This impressive 7-storey building is one of the main focal points of culture in Cairo. Built in 1988, this centre is also a wonderful example of modern Islamic architecture. It was built to replace the old opera house and includes two opera halls and three different theatres where a wide variety of music, dance and theatre performances are held. There is also a museum and a library, and in the summer performances are given in two open-air amphitheatres. There are often multiple performances happening on the same night, and a schedule can be found in the local newspapers. In the main hall, formal dress is expected, though not in the smaller venues. The tickets are amazingly cheap for the top level of the performances, and is a fraction of what one would have to pay to see the same groups elsewhere.
Arab Music Institute
This performance venue focuses on classical Arab music, which is not often heard at the more Western-oriented Opera House. A number of the prominent Arabic music groups perform here regularly, the National Arab Music Ensemble and Umm Kalthoum Classical Music Troupe being two of the most noteworthy.
