Restaurants
Cairo is full of a variety of restaurants, with many excellent examples of the local cuisine as well as other types, the most common being Italian, French, Asian, and Mediterranean. Outdoor dining is popular in Cairo and most restaurants have an outdoor seating area. There are also a number of cozy sidewalk cafés that offer good opportunities to people watch. Egyptian women do not go to these cafés, however, so women tourists may feel a bit self-conscious. As Cairo is a Muslim city, it is not uncommon for restaurants not to serve alcohol. If you want to drink water, bottled water is recommended as tap water is not particularly pure.
Egyptian cuisine
Egyptian food is known for being hearty and tasty and the cuisine has African, Arabic and Mediterranean elements. Traditional dishes that are found in most restaurants and snackbars are falafel, kebab (grilled meat), baba ghannoug (a tasty sauce of tahini and eggplant), kofta (ground meatballs), tahini salad, stuffed grape leaves, and kusheri (lentils and rice.) A distinctive array of pungeant spices season Egyptian food, though most dishes are not hot. One of the most popular beverages in Cairo is freshly squeezed fruit juices. Sugarcane juice is also a local phenomenon, a foamy and very sweet light-green beverage. Despite the fact that many Muslims drink no alcohol, there are a variety of good Egyptian beers and wines, available in many restaurants and shops.
