This 24-hour restaurant is famous for its delicious and very cheap Egyptian food. It is always crowded with many people trying to order at once through the cashier’s window. Typical choices include fuul, taamiya, baba ghannoug, and many others. All dishes come with baladi bread and turshi. An English menu is available inside in the sit-down section. Takeaway is a popular option.

Petit Palmyra
This is an elegantly furnished restaurant with consistently high quality food at reasonable prices. Their most popular dishes are kofta, kebabs, pigeon, and a variety of pasta dishes. The decor is part of the restaurant’s charm and includes marble floors, comfortable silk-upholstered chairs, a number of old black and white photos of Cairo, and lots of fresh flowers. Dinners are accompanied by live piano music.

Haty el-Geish
This restaurant is famous for having once been the favourite of Egypt’s King Farouk. It is a popular restaurant with the locals and has built up a dedicated clientelle. It is a grill house and focuses on meat dishes, with many variations on ribs, liver, kidneys, kebab and kofta. The kofta is said to be particularly good here. Most main dishes come with a variety of vegetables. Some of the delicious desserts on offer include Om Ali, creme caramel, mahalabiyya and fruit salad. The waiters are very polite, but on the slow side. Takeaway is available.

Bent el-Sultan
This restaurant is known for its excellent Egyptian food of all types. It has a stylish and traditional atmosphere, and offers a variety of lesser known delicacies on the menu as well as the old favourites. It has a popular outdoor café as part of the restaurant, overlooking the square.
Abou Shakra
This is a fancy kebab house that has been well-known for its authentic Egyptian dishes for over 50 years. Their main specialty is kebabs but they also serve pigeon, chicken, beef dishes and a variety of salads. The desserts are particularly good, such as the traditional Om Ali, a flakey pastry filled with raisins and nuts soaked in sugar and milk. The service here can be slow, but it is part of the experience and it is worth it. Home delivery and take away are also available.
