Cairo offers a wide selection of shopping opportunities, in everything from traditional markets like Khan el-Khalili to designer fashion. Markets have always been very popular, and are places where you can find just about everything. Some specialties of the typical Egyptian market include ceramics, leatherwork, perfumes, spices, gold and silver jewellery, glass, fabrics and carpets. The Wekale al-Balaq market is famous for its fabrics and appliqué work. Cairo is also known as the fashion centre of North Africa, and has a variety of boutiques and clothing stores of all kinds. There are also many bookshops, stores of traditional Egyptian crafts, and specialty food shops selling cheeses, pastries, fruit, and a variety of other delicacies.
