Public Transport
Cairo has with its 18 million inhabitants an extensive road network, rail and metro system. There are also a lot of good working busses, trams and taxis which are the most common transportation in Cairo.
The prices for such transportation are very affordable.
Cairo
by bus
Buses are the most common mode of transport in Cairo. There are several different lines of standard and mini-buses run by the CTA (Cairo Transportation Authority) throughout the city, and tickets are sold for different classes like on the train. Air conditioned buses are slightly more expensive. Most buses in Cairo are smelly and overcrowded, but they will take you where you need to go. Private microbuses are becoming more and more popular in the city. They can be tricky to use if unfamiliar with the area, however, because the destinations are not marked on the routes and they are not always reliable. These buses are the cheapest way to get around Cairo, however.
Cairo
by tram
Cairo has had trams since 1896, though now they are beginning to be phased out. There are now three different tram lines, connecting the centre of Cairo to Heliopolis and Nasr City, among other locations.
Cairo
by metro
The metro system in Cairo is the only full-fledged one in Africa’s and is very clean, quick, safe and cheap. Currently it consists two lines, with a third in planning. The line 1 goes from Helwan to El-Marg and is the South to North-East connection and the line 2 (Shobra - El Mounib) is the East to North one. In the next years it is planned that Cairo subjoin more lines, so that nearly every direction is filled out with the metro.
Both lines operating daily from 5 am to 11 pm. Smoking in the stations or trains is not permitted.
You should be attentive that until 6 pm the first two cabins are reserved for women. As a man you couldn’t go in but for women it is free in which cabin they drive.
For each journey, regardless of the distance, the tickets cost EGP 1.00 (Eur 0.14, USD 0.18)
Taxis
Taxis are the easiest and most reliable form of transport in Cairo for visitors. They are easy to find and very cheap compared with other cities. Most taxis are white and black, and can be hailed by waving to the driver. A new private Taxi service was organized in March of 2006 including three different companies. These new yellow taxis offer more comfortable taxi service in modern, air conditioned cars. During rush hour, people who are going the same direction often share taxis. Avoid taxi drivers who ask for payment or a tip before you enter the taxi as they will almost always try to overcharge you.
