Shopping
Cologne is certainly one of Germany’s shopping strongholds with an abundance of shopping opportunities. Apart from the mostly crowded pedestrian areas there are many interesting locations in the inner city or in one of the other quarter of Cologne. Long shopping streets compete with shopping arcades and shopping centres where everything is under one roof. Besides popular shops and chains like H&M, Mango or Zara, the city along the Rhine offers many fancy or elegant boutiques, antique and art shops or second hand fashion.
A good option to start is probably the Hohe Straße close to Cologne’s cathedral. Many known chains like MediaMarkt, Zero and H&M have stores there. The city’s best known shopping street, however, is the Schildergasse, which connects the Hohe Straße with the Neumarkt. As a exclusive pedestrian area it is all the time packed with people.
The Mittelstrasse is said to be the most exclusive shopping mile in Cologne. Exquisite boutiques, gentlemen's outfitters, shoes shops and a bunch of furniture stores attract the well-heeled. Also Pfeilstraße has some fancy fashion stores, antique shops and art traders but what makes it special are the quality restaurants, the decoration stores and different service providers. During the years Ehrenstraße has developed into a well equipped shopping mile where traditional values are combined with an eccentric ambience. The variety that is offered here is immense and handy for all those who don’t want to walk far for their shopping. Tradition is also an important issue in Breite Straße where shops are still run by the shop owner and where the attractiveness of the area is enhanced with new building projects, the opera arcades or the WDR arcades. Art galleries, furniture stores, books and antique stores characterise the appearance of Auf dem Berlich where you will certainly find some extraordinary pieces. Of course there are many side streets in the city centre and the surrounding neighbourhood that are packed with all kind of shops and shopping centres. Just by taking a walk around you will bump into something you like because that is how Cologne’s shopping world is: surprising, glamorous but also fancy and crazy.
Shops on the Hohe Straße and Schildergasse are open on weekdays from 10 am to 8 pm and on Fridays even until 10 pm. Supermarkets are usually open from Monday to Saturday 8 am to 8 pm. The post office and the Postbank are open weekdays from 9 am to 6 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. Most of the banks open at 10 am and close at 6 or 7 pm during the week and at 4 pm on Saturdays.
