By air
Cologne’s airport Köln/Bonn is located at the south east of the city. It is one of the most important cargo airports and the major airport for low cost airlines. Flights go to over 130 destinations in 39 countries with 60 airlines. The most approached locations are big cities like London, Stockholm or Nice, holiday destinations in the Mediterranean and on the Canary Islands. There are weekly flights to many East-European cities as well as to the US and to Iran. Middle distances are handled by airlines like Lufthansa, Blue Air, SunExpress, Air Berlin and Condor but also low cost airlines operate in this field for example to Turkey.
The most important low cost airlines flying from the Airport Köln/Bonn are Germanwings, TUIfly, easyJet an WIZZ.

Cargo flights are handled by UPS and FedEx as well as Coyne Air, TAP or British Airways World Cargo. The advantage of this airport lies in the fact that there are no limitations for night flights until 2030 what makes the airport especially attractive to cargo companies.

The airport possesses two terminals which are handling up to 12 million passengers per year. Furthermore, there are parking places offering space for 13.000 cars. The car park is located close at Terminal 1. Short-time parking is available at Terminal 2. The airport can also be reached via ICE, regional trains or S-Bahn within the fast train connection Cologne – Rhein/Main.

By train
Cologne’s central train station is the Western platform for the international railway traffic. From here trains run to every direction in Europe. Travellers from the UK have to take the Eurostar train to Brussels Midi/Zuid and from there the high-speed train, either Thalys or Germand ICE, to Cologne. The central train station as well as the train station “Bahnhof Deutz” are connected to the local railway system which operates underground railways (U-Bahn) and overground railways (S-Bahn).

By car
The road traffic in and around Cologne is of high importance since Cologne has a huge traffic density. The two motorways A3 and A4 create a ring road in the east of the city. The A1 is another important motorway, if not the most important one. It connects the ring road with the west of the city. In the south the A59 leads to the airport Köln/Bonn. Apart from the motorways, there are many federal highways, the so called inner rings of Cologne. The ring road that is closest to the city is connected to a radial system of small streets which lead to locations around Cologne.

The A57 leading from the city centre of Cologne to Krefeld is also a relevant motorway. Nevertheless, there is a lot traffic jams and traffic chaos in and around the city. A special road that releases the traffic is still in planning. However, the B55a and the A559 are used for exact that purpose, although they are just some extended radial highways. The city part left of the Rhine is characterised by 4 ring roads inside the ring of motorways. These 4 ring roads follow former city fortifications.
