Public transportation
The public transportation includes S-Bahn, city trains and busses of the KVB (Cologne’s transport companies) and other transportation companies. All public means of transportation can be used at equal prices within the VRS (transportation in the Rhein-Sieg region) which is connected with the VRR (transportation in the Rhein-Ruhr region). Tickets need to be bought in advance. Tickets are available as individual tickets per journey (Einzelfahrt) or day tickets (Tagesticket) at automated ticket machines at the stations or from the bus drivers directly. Tickets can be used within a certain time limit for y journey in one direction. The trip can be disrupted but the ticket cannot be used for return or round trips. Day tickets are available for 20 min, 90 min, 120 min, 180 min and 360 min. Tickets from the automated ticket machines are already invalidated. A daily ticket can be used by one person for an indefinite amount of trips within the tariff zone. They are transferable to any other person and a valid on the day of invalidation until 3 am of the following day. The Köln Welcome Card, however, gives unlimited travel on all public transport and can be purchased at the tourist information offices.
A special public service vehicle is the Bimmelbahn (www.bimmelbahnen.de), a tourist land train that departs every half hour from Roncalliplatz, at the side of the Dom, with an itinerary that includes the chocolate museum, the zoo and in December the Christmas Markets.
