Copenhagen is filled with cafés and bars of all kinds, and any given neighbourhood of the city will have some distinctive establishments where you can get a drink and a snack. You can tell the good cafés and bars because they will be full of locals. Several bars feature live music, as well as some cafés, often jazz or blues. Both cafés and bars tend to be cozy and atmospheric, and the coffee and beer is generally of high quality. Drinks are notoriously overpriced, however, so don’t be surprised by how fast your bill adds up. Wines in particular are more expensive in Denmark than other European countries. A delicious cheap snack that is widely available at cafés, however, is smřrredbrřd. This is an open sandwich that you choose the topping for, from options such as boiled egg and dill, beetroot, mackrel, cold meats, or roast onions.
Some neighbourhoods known for their cafés and bars include Nyhavn and the area around the Ĺrhus river. Nyhavn is the old sailors’ district, located on the harbour, and is now a lively and atmospheric sector of the city, full of trendy cafés and bars. The scenic buildings along the Ĺrhus are also an ideal location for cafés, and you can relax at many riverside establishments while enjoying a nice view and refreshing river breeze. The river was closed off for many years, but has recently been reopened and is now a very popular nightlife area.
