Copenhagen has a lively, varied, and cutting-edge nightlife scene, which surprises many of the city’s vistiors. The main nightlife areas are centered around Strøget, Vesterbro, and for the more upscale, Østerbro. Many clubs don’t get going until quite late, and most of them begin to fill up around midnight. When the locals go out, it is common to first have a couple drinks at a regular bar, then head for a club to dance or just for a change of scenery. Some clubs are very serious about their dancing, and you will see almost no one sitting around. The most popular styles of music featured at Copenhagen clubs includes hip-hop, R&B, salsa/Latin, jazz and pop. Jazz has a special place in the hearts of Danes, and some of the most chic clubs or restaurants feature jazz music. Many top-notch international jazz musicians perform in the city regularly. There are some punk and metal places as well, but they are more few and far between. There is a variety of trendy dance places located in the area around Nikolaj Kirken. The nightlife scene changes continually, and new bars and clubs spring up often.
