Noma
This restaurant has been awarded two Michelin stars, and the expert chef René Redzepi combines traditional Danish food with influences of French and international cuisine. Noma is located in a converted warehouse from the 19th century, right on the scenic harbour in Christianshavn and near to the city opera house. Redzepi is careful to use only the best ingredients, and imports many of them from Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Dishes here feature musk ox, Jutland marsh lamb, game, Faroe Islands scallops, and more accompanied by delicacies such as wild berries, mushrooms, local vegetables and herbs. An à la carte menu is available, or you could be adventurous and try the seven-course tasting menu with complimentary wines. The desserts here are exceptional, and the staff is very attentive and polite. Reservations are necessary. All major credit cards are accepted.

Ensemble
Another of Copenhagen’s best Danish restaurants, Ensemble offers gourmet food in an environment of simple and elegant Danish design. It is well worthy of its Michelin star, and the chefs Morten Schou and Niklaj Egebøl use the best Danish ingredients, combined with some international influences, primarily French, to spice up traditional dishes. There is one set menu at any given time, which changes every two weeks. There are wines selected to go with the menu, as well as another wine list from which you can choose some excellent French and other European wines. The restaurant is small and intimate, and the food is known for being minimalistic, yet gourmet.

Ida Davidsen
This family-run restaurant is five generations old, and has developed an international reputation as an excellent place to have lunch. Smørrebrød of all descriptions are the specialty here, and people flock from far and wide to try the distinctive toppings and freshly baked bread. One of their sandwich inventions is the H.C. Andersen, with liver pate, bacon and tomatoes, and the smoked duck is also highly recommended, served with a cabbage and horseradish salad. Reservations are necessary.

Husmanns Vinstue
This quaint restaurant, founded in 1888, is typical old-world Denmark. It is located in a cozy basement, which used to be a stable, and is decorated with old fashioned dark green lamps, classic beer mugs, and black and white photos of the city. Guests sit at sturdy, rustic wooden tables. Smørrebrød is a specialty, served on hearty rye bread, and you can order many varieties of herring: fried, curried, marinated and spiced. Other dishes include smoked eel with scrambled eggs, homemade sausage, and roast beef with potato salad. Noteworthy people who have eaten here include Walt Disney and the Danish royal family. All major credit cards are accepted. Reservations are necessary.

The Paul
The Paul offers an elegant and creative take on Danish cuisine, located within Tivoli Gardens. The dining room is located in a lovely glass pavilion, and decorated with large white candles and roses. The chef in Paul Cunningham, well-known for his dishes that combine traditional Danish recipes with foreign elements, such as sea bass with Spanish olives and almonds. There is a fixed price menu with seven courses and delicious wines to accompany them. The desserts are also excellent, one of the most popular being rhubarb tart with tea ice cream on caramel. Many celebrities have been known to dine here, as well as the Danish Royal Family. All major credit cards are accepted. Reservations are necessary.

Søren K
This sleek, modern restaurant is located within the Royal Library building, also known as the Black Diamond. The food is a combination of Scandinavian and French elements, and appeals to the health conscious by using no cream, butter or stock. The dishes are light and highly flavourful, with one of the specialties being a five-course menu called “A Couple of Hours in the Company of Fish.” Fish dishes here are very good, including tuna in soy and sesame sauce, and mussels served with lemon and thyme. There are a variety of interesting vegetarian dishes as well, such as tofu marinated in red wine and topped with sesame seeds, radishes and passion fruit. Prices range from 150 kr - 200 kr. Credit cards are accepted, namely Discover, MasterCard and Visa.
