Copenhagen’s small size and pedestrian-only zones make it a charming and convenient city in which to shop. Each of the main shopping streets has a variety of different stores, and within only a few blocks you can usually find everything from exclusive clothing stores to antique shops and second hand book stores. Strøget is a famous and busy shopping street, specializing in very posh shops. Running parallel to it is the quieter Strædet, which also has some lovely stores. Denmark’s queen has been known to shop on Strøget, hence the area’s name as the Royal District, and several of the merchants there advertise that they are “purveyors to her Majesty the Queen of Denmark.” Also part of the Royal District are Store Kongensgade and Bredgade.
The various neighbourhoods and quarters of Copenhagen tend to attract certain types or styles of shops. Larsbjørnsstræde, for example, is known for avant-garde and underground artsy stores, and Bredgade specializes in antiques, silver, and furniture shops. The Kronprinsensgade is now the most popular area to shop for the latest fashions, and several new Danish designers have opened stores here. Many stores in Copenhagen are one-of-a-kind, or Danish-only chains, but you will also find major international chains, especially in the shopping malls.
