National Museum of Ireland
This museum focuses on the history of Ireland, going back to the time of Irish antiquity, and contains an impressive collection of artifacts and artwork, some as old as 7000 BC. Some of the most important items on display here include the beautifully crafted 8th century Ardagh Chalice and Tara Brooch, and the 12th century Cross of Cong. There are many displays of fine Irish goldwork, and the musuem has the best collection of prehistoric gold artifacts in Europe. The exhibits trace the country’s history up through the modern day, and the most in-depth are on prehistoric Ireland, Viking Ireland, medieval Ireland, and the Irish “Road to Independence,” focusing on the period from 1900- 1921. Entrance to the musuem is free.

There are masterpaintings, watercolours, drawings, prints, as well as a sculpture section. Nearly all main European schools of painting are well-represented, and special attention is given to Irish painters. A new wing was added a few years ago, which won an award for its architectural design, and showcases Irish art from the first half of the 20th century. It includes a sculpture gallery and some frequently-changing temporary exhibitions.

James Joyce Musuem
This unique musuem is located in a 12 metre-tall Martello tower that was once a residence of James Joyce. The tower is one of several stone structures built in Sandycove, a suburb of Dublin, in the early 19th century to guard against a possible invasion from Napoleon’s troops. In later years, many of the towers were converted into homes, and Joyce lived here as a guest of his friend Oliver Gogarty in 1904. The tower figures in Joyce’s Ulysses and has since become known as “Joyce’s Tower.” The museum features a collection of Joyce’s letters, documents, photographs, personal possessions, and first and rare editions.
Opening times: Apr - Oct Mon - Sat 10 am - 1 pm and 2 pm - 5 pm, Sun 2 pm - 6 pm (closed from Nov - Mar)
Entrance prices: € 5.50 for adults, €4.50 for students and seniors, € 3.15 for children

Kilmainham Gaol Historical Musuem
This is an fascinating yet grim musuem, and a must-see for anyone interested in Ireland’s struggle for independence. This former gaol is the site where numerous famous and not-so-famous political prisoners were imprisioned, tortured and executed between 1796 - 1924. Among others, the leaders of the 1916 Easter Uprising were killed here. The last person to be incarcerated in the prison was Eamon de Valera, who would later become Prime Minister. The musuem is moving and informative, and the experience will stay with you long after you have left.

Natural History Musuem
An unusual and old-fashioned musuem, the Natural History Musuem gives a glimpse into the past as an example of a typical Victorian musuem. It has largely remained unchanged since this period, and is a rather stuffy, stone-walled establishment displaying countless stuffed and mounted animals. The creatures are held in polished wooden cabinets and are arranged and displayed exactly as they would have been in the 19th century. Through these stuffed specimens, the musuem presents the zoological history of Ireland as well as shows examples of different animal groups from all over the world. It includes some animals that are now extinct or very rare. One of the most popular exhibits is the Blaschka glass models of marine animals.
