Dublin is now a better city to shop in than ever, and has just about every kind of store imaginable. It’s not a good place to come for bargains, but the quality of craftsmanship is generally very high. Some classic Irish items that you will find featured in many shops include hand knits, hand-woven wool blankets, Belleek china and Waterford crystal. Dublin is also making a name for itself as a centre of fashion, and there are numerous shops selling chic clothes from the city’s many up-and-coming designers.
One of the main shopping areas is located on and around Grafton Street. This street includes many clothing shops, including Brown Thomas or BT, Dublin’s most fashionable department store, and some jewellers. The smaller side streets in the area specialize in books, crafts, antiques, and more clothing and jewellery. Another excellent place to find many interesting shops and stalls in one place is the George’s Street Arcade. This street has an artsy, bohemian atmosphere and features jewellery, used books, and vintage clothes.
The city also has a wonderful array of markets. Traditionally, Dubliners did virtually all of their shopping at different weekly markets, and this is still one of the most popular ways to shop in the city. There are markets specializing in fresh produce, meat and fish, organic foods, antiques, used books, clothing, and more, as well as some flea markets selling a bit of everything.
Most stores in Dublin are open Mon- Sat from 9 am - 6 pm, and many stay open until 9 pm on Thursdays. Larger shops are usually open on Sundays as well, most commonly from 12 pm - 6 pm.
