by train
Dublin is well-connected to the surrouding cities via the Intercity train service, and DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) runs the trains within the city. The DART trains are electric and run on a single line that goes along the coast, as far south as Bray and as far north as Howth. There are three DART stations within the city of Dublin: Pearse, Connolly and Tara Street. Trains usually depart every 10 - 15 minutes. You can almost always buy your ticket at the station, and you should do this before you get on the train whenever possible. There are some combinations and special deals on train travel that can save you money, such as the one-day rail, DART and bus ticket that costs € 8.20 but gets you free travel on all public transport.

by bus
In Dublin the buses form the backbone of the public transportation system, and are often the best way to get from place to place as well as the cheapest. Buses run very often, and the first buses start around 7 am, though it depends on the specific stop, and the last buses depart at 11.30 pm. A Nightlink service takes over after 11.30 on Mon - Sat and on bank holiday Sundays. All the bus routes have their own number, and their end destination is displayed on the front of the bus. To look up specific bus routes, you can check out the Dublin Bus website at www.dublinbus.ie.
Bus fares vary depending how old you are and how far you are travelling, but the range is only from € 1 - 2. You can also buy day passes, or 3-day, 5-day, weekly, and monthly passes that save you a lot of money if you use the bus frequently. There is also a travel pass called the Dublin Pass that provides unlimited travel on buses, as well as free travel to the airport and free access to many tourist attractions. These can be purchased at any tourist office in Dublin, and are available for 1, 2, 3, or 6 days. For information on anything relating to Dublin buses, you can phone +353 (0)1 8734222.

by tram
The tram is a good and fast way to get around Dublin, though doesn’t cover the city as extensively as the buses do. The tram system is called LUAS, and has a “green line” and a “red line.” The green line runs from Sandyford to St. Stephen’s Green, and the red line runs from Tallaght to Connolly. The red line is generally more useful for tourists, as it travels right through the centre of the city. The trams run Mon - Fri from 5.30 am - 12.30 am, Sat 6.30 am - 12.30 am, and Sun 7 am - 11.30 pm. They come every 7 - 10 minutes during the peak times, and every 20 minutes during other times. A single ticket costs € 1.25 and is valid for 90 minutes, and a return costs € 2.50. You can save money by buying a day tram ticket for € 4.60, or a week tram pass for € 10. It is also possible to get passes that combine bus and tram travel, such as the day pass for € 8.20 that provides free access to all public transport.

Taxis
There are taxis all over the city of Dublin, and it is usually easy to hail a cab in the street or find one in a rank of taxis. Travelling by taxi is not cheap, and most taxis have meters, but there are often extra charges for luggage or for more than one passenger. It is possible that you will have to wait a long time at a taxi rank late at night or on the weekends, but you can always phone ahead to arrange a pick up.
