Florence is one of Italy’s most famous cultural centres, and has been since before the Renaissance. The city is known as “the capital of arts” and contains approximately half of the most important art works in Italy. The most renowned museum in Florence is the Uffizi, which has the greatest collection of Italian Renaissance masters in the world, housing works by Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Rubens and many others. The cultural life in Florence is rich and varied and the many international travelers give it a cosmopolitan atmosphere. There are a number of musical and theatrical venues that offer programs suited to many different tastes. The Teatro Comunale is one of the major centres for the performing arts, and has regular concerts, plays, dance performances and other shows. Most plays are put on in Italian, but several theatres have a foreign language production at least once a week. Florence is known for its outdoor cinemas, which attract huge crowds in the warmer months. Films are usually dubbed into Italian, but some of the cinemas show them in the original languages. There are a variety of summer festivals in Florence combining all genres of the arts, that take place in public squares all over the city.
