Teatro della Pergola
This is Florence’s main theatre for plays, and some of the most sought-after national and international touring companies perform here. The theatre was established in 1656 and is one of the oldest in all of Italy. It is beautifully decorated in the Baroque style, and has three levels of boxes. Performances take place year round, except for during the Maggio Musicale festival. The plays put on here tend to be very interesting, and range from the traditional to the modern. Emphasis is put on classic theatre from the Ancient Greeks to Shakespeare, though Samuel Beckett and modern Italian playwrights are also popular. Performances are generally all in Italian. The building is also used for chamber music performances and small scale opera.

Teatro Puccini
This is a popular theatre with the locals in Florence, though not so well-attended by tourists. If you speak Italian, however, it is an excellent place to spend an evening, with unique and innovative performances and some of the best Italian comic actors. Many types of drama are performed, including many new plays. It is a cozy and intimate theatre, seating around 600.

Teatro Comunale
This hall is the main venue for opera in Florence, though also puts on a variety of plays. The theatre was originally built as an open-air amphitheatre, opened in 1862. It was modernized in 1961 after being closed for refurbishment for three years. It reopened as a smaller hall, seating 2,000 instead of 6,000, and boasting an acoustically improved elliptical auditorium, a large orchestra pit and two semicircular galleries in addtion to a row of box seats. The theatre also contains the Piccolo Teatro, which is a small modern hall seating about 600. Drama is performed in both venues, with emphasis on Italian playwrights and usually only Italian-language productions.
