Alfredo
This is one of Florence’s oldest restaurants and has kept up its reputation for supurb food throughout its long history. They offer a hearty menu of meat and fish dishes as well as pizza baked in a traditional wood oven. Pasta dishes are also very popular. One of the best dishes is said to be the shellfish spaghetti, and polenta toasts with porcini mushrooms, spicy mussels and marinated salmon are also recommended. The wines are of the finest quality and feature many local wines. Prices are fairly reasonable and average around € 23 for a meal.

Belle Donne
This restaurant is not located in a very easy place to find, but is certainly worth it once you get there. Its entrance is a green door tucked away on a narrow street, with no identifying sign. The service here is unusually good, with friendly and attentive waiters, and the wait is usually short. Belle Donne has a warm, welcoming atmosphere and is popular with both locals and tourists. They offer a set menu that is written on a chalkboard, and many of the dishes change according to the season. The chef likes to present traditional dishes alongside his more creative alternatives, such as cream of zucchini and chestnut soup or lemon chicken. The osso bucco is one of the most popular traditional dishes. Only the freshest ingredients are used here, and the restaurant is known for its tasty vegetables and good salads.

Alle Murate
This restaurant features traditional Tuscan food with some innovative twists. It is one of Florence’s most famous restaurants, and one that many tourists head for, but still maintains an intimate atmosphere to go with its high quality food. The décor is very pleasant, with warm Mediterranean colors, artistically placed mirrors and subdued lighting. Fish dishes are the most popular specialty, and there is also a variety of delectable meat entrees, and of course a wide selection of pastas. There is a special waiter in charge of the wine, and he will help you select the perfect wine to accompany your meal. Most meals are between € 30 - 40 if you order wine. Credit cards are accepted.

Cavolo Nero
Located in the charming old quarter of San Frediano, this traditional restaurant is small, fashionable and reminiscent of old Italy. Lit mainly by candlelight, it cultivates an intimate and romantic atmosphere, and in the summer food is served on a lovely terrace surrounded by greenery. Many of the dishes are native to the Florentine region, and are prepared with care, bringing out the distinctive flavors of local produce and cooking traditions. The pasta is homemade and always fresh, as is the bread. Some of the pasta favorites are tagliolini with octopus ink and ravioli with ricotta and black cabbage pesto. There are a variety of delicious fish dishes, some of which are very simple, such as salmon in butter. Rabbit and steak are among the featured meats, and are cooked to perfection in tasty sauces. The wine list presents a range of Tuscan wines to suit many tastes. The restaurant is not large, so reservations are recommended. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food.

Masticabrodo
This is an “osteria” located in the middle of the scenic Santa Croce district. It is very small, but during warm weather expands to include a spacious terrace. The restaurant has been around for many years and keeps up an old-style atmosphere. It is part wine bar and part restaurant, and the proprietor tries to recreate the feel of an old Florentine “vineria.” The food is simple and delicious, mostly made up of authentic Tuscan dishes. There are many varieties of meat, cooked however you like it, bruschetta, charcuterie, soups of many kinds, and many popular pasta dishes. Some favorites include tagliatelle al sugo and gnocchi with gorgonzola and grilled vegetables. Prices are low, averaging around € 13.

Il Francescano
Another typical Tuscan trattoria, this one serves exceptional food and has a dedicated clientele of locals. Especially popular with artists for some reason, including writers, painters and actors, this is always an interesting place to come for a meal. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming for tourists as well as regulars.
The food is very simple, and the tastiness lies in the good ingredients and careful preparation. The Tuscan antipasti here are famous throughout Florence, and the crostoni with beans is another favorites. Dishes that are regularly on the menu also include bread soup with tomato, risotto with pumpkin or a variety of other vegetables, spelt soup and cappellacci with thyme. Main meat and fish courses are always offered as well. The prices are very reasonable.

I Quattro Amici
This small yet popular restaurant is located right next to the main train station. It serves some of the best and freshest seafood in the city, and service is quick and good. Some seafood antipasti include oysters, Venus clams, sardines, and marinated salmon carpaccio. Regular main courses include fresh pasta with fish sauce, lobster and scampi, and fish cooked in almost every way possible. There are also pasta and meat dishes, but the emphasis here is on fish. The dishes change from day to day according to the market availability of the seafood. The prices are mid-range.

Da Carlino Diladdarno
A family-run, traditional trattoria, this restaurant is welcoming and a place where mainly locals eat. Located just off the Piazza Santo Spirito, it is in a pleasant spot of the city and made more charming by its adjoining garden terrace. The food is good and old-fashioned. There is a wide choice of pasta and meat dishes, and a tantalizing array of homemade desserts. Some of the popular dishes include pasta e fagioli, ribollita, tomato soup, meat loaf, Tuscan casseroles and chine of pork. The dessert menu usually features apple pie, lemon tart and chocolate mousse. The décor is simple yet elegant, with warm light and modern wooden furnishings. Prices are very reasonable.

Casale dei Ricci
This is a pizzeria, located right in the city centre. The emphasis is on creative pizzas, though of course the traditional favorites are offered as well. There are also other meals besides pizza, mainly featuring pasta or fish. Some of the innovative pizza combinations include pizzas topped with prawns and asparagus or courgette. There is also a wide selection of antipasti, mostly seafood and salads. The décor is charming and rustic, and the exterior is made beautiful by the many plants surrounding the restaurant. In the summer, a delightful terrace is situated here.
