Nightlife
Hamburg’s nightlife concentrates of course on St. Pauli which used to be famous for its sex-shops, strip clubs and prostitutes. This still exists but throughout the years many discotheques, bars, theatres and cafes have mingled with the numerous “wicked” establishments. The Reeperbahn has in fact much more to offer. Hamburg’s wax works “Panoptikum”, the Imperial Theatre, Schmidts Tivoli and the St. Pauli Theatre provide Hamburg’s locals and visitors with a lot of fun and enjoyment by presenting vaudeville shows, comedy, musicals or theatre plays. The area around the Hans-Albers-Platz is packed with bars and pubs of all kinds. During summer time tables are set outside. Famous bars are "Quer", "Mary Lou’s", “Frida B.“ or the Irish Pub “Molly Malone“ where Live music guarantees an exiting time. "La Paloma" is a bar where only „Schlager“ is played but which always has a boiling atmosphere. Also around the old fish market there are cafes and bars which attract a lot of young folks. The Großneumarkt has turned into a meeting point for all kinds of people. Wine bars, pubs, cellar restaurants and jazz bars attract locals and travellers alike. On warm summer evenings the place becomes a big beer garden which closes on weekdays around 11 pm and 12 pm at the weekends. Also the area Schanzenviertel is populated with many bars and cafes where people even meet in the morning for a coffee. The heart piece of this quarter is the so-called “bladebone” where numerous restaurants have tables outside and the atmosphere resembles a big generous piazza. Hamburg’s inner city is less impressive when it comes to nightlife while the lively district of St. Georg, which starts behind the central station, provides a wide range of cinemas, restaurants, bars and cafes as well as snack bars and amusement arcades.
