Restaurants

Hamburg’s inhabitants are often referred to as "Fischköppe" (fish heads) thanks to the city’s location to the sea and the high consumption of fish and sea food. But actually Hamburg has one of the highest amounts of gourmet restaurants in Germany. Hence it is not surprising that eating out in Hamburg can be a real delight. Besides fresh fish the choice ranges from tasty regional specialities to international cuisine. No matter what preference might be on hand, Hamburg can offer hundreds of restaurants, eateries, snack bars and cafes that provide an unbelievable culinary variety. Apart from the known Mediterranean, Asian and local cuisine, Hamburg has some exquisite foreign restaurants offering Afghan, Croatian, Persian, Russian or Yugoslavian dishes. Of course Bratwurst, doner kebab or fish sandwich are also available in small snack bars and eateries.

Hamburg’s Cuisine
Hamburg’s specialities have always been based on fish thanks to its closeness to the North Sea and the river Elbe. A wide range of imported spices and goods were available and fresh vegetables and fruits were sold from the surrounding areas. The most known fish dishes are lobster soup, Matjes Herring and plaice “Scholle Finkenwerder Art” which have reached a national popularity. Some fish dishes are accompanied by backed potatoes or potato salad. The rural environment around Hamburg contributed a couple of hearty stews made from rutabaga, beef and potatoes or from pears, beans and bacon. The Hamburg eel soup does actually not include any eel at all. The soup’s name goes back to Hamburg’s regional dialect in which the sentence „aalens was noch da is'' rinkommt“ describes that the food is made from leftovers. But since tourists don’t know, restaurants sometimes put eel into the soup to avoid confusion. Another main dish in the Hamburg region is cabbage which is served with boiled sausage, smoked pig’s cheek or smoked pork chop. The meal is accompanied by small potatoes and beer or schnapps. After all these hearty meals people like to eat something sweet. Desserts are for example red fruit jelly (Rote Grütze) made from sour cherries, red and black currants and maybe raspberries and served with cream, milk or vanilla sauce.
