Istanbul offers loads of possibilities to have a tea or a coffee in a nice atmosphere. You can have tea (cay) on every occasion and every time of the day. This tradition goes back to the decay of the Ottoman Empire when Turkey lost its distributor for coffee – Jemen. The alternative was tea which is now the traditional drink in Turkey. The typical coffee is served in the “Cezye”, a small can in which coffee powder, water and sugar is heated at the same time. When the coffee is family boiling the “Kahve” is served in small cups. Another famous drink is Ayran, a yoghurt drink that is weakened with water, salted and coolly served. It is especially tasty on hot days as it is refreshing and recreating. As an alcoholic drink, Raki is on the top of the favourite drinks. No matter if during the meal, with sweet things, meat and fish or with the starters Raki is always a welcome drink.
Istanbul’s Beyoglu has been the best place for a time out, a drink or some entertainment. It is the area where artists, students and intellectuals meet. Bars, cafes and pubs on mass are inviting to have a nice and enjoyable evening no matter if chic, rustic or trendy.
