Istanbul is a cultural centre where international plays as well as plays by Turkish playwrights are staged frequently in small theatres in Istiklal Caddesi. Some ore commercial performances take place in the “Atatürk Kültür Merkezi” in Takism. Sometimes they have subtitles in English.

Atatürk Kültür Merkezi
Shortly called AKM, the Atatürk Kültür Merkezi has three halls. The big hall gives place to 1307 visitors and is mainly used for ballet, opera performances and concerts. Another smaller hall has 502 seats and is used as a conference room. The exhibition hall is 1200 m². The AKM hosts the Symphonic Orchestra of Istanbul and its choir, The Modern Folklore Ensemble and the Choir of classical Turkish Music.

Akatlar Kültür Merkezi
The cultural centre in Akatlar is a cultural complex with a modern theatre hall that can host up to 350 people, an exhibition hall, a ballet room and some class rooms. Here you can come for concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions and art lessons.

The city theatre in Istanbul is an amazingly big complex with 7 stages and 200 actors.

Istanbul Devlet Tiyatrosu (State Theatre)
The Turkish State Theatre was founded in 1949 and is an official directorate of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey. It consists of 12 sub-directories in different Turkish cities with 36 stages and 2200 employed artists and technicians. Each season there are about 120 productions which attract ca. 1.5 million visitors. The State Theatre is supported by the state in order to promote the theatre culture in Turkey.
