Slowacki Theatre
Built in 1893, this theatre is an architectural masterpiece modelled on the Paris Opera building. It has an ornate and impressive façade, covered with allegorical figures and a variety of detailed designs. The interior also features fin-de-siècle grandeur, with a marble staircase and a very elegant foyer. The productions here are primarily opera and drama, but also include some dance and occasional music performances.

Bagatela
The Bagatela was originally built as a children’s theatre, known for its fun and creative productions. It has now branched out to include a wide range of adult-oriented drama, classic and contemporary, as well as musicals. The theatre has a reputation for more light-hearted productions than other drama venues in the city.

Groteska
This theatre presents a wide range of productions every year, from traditional Polish fairy tales to experimental contemporary drama, and many premieres are staged here. Nearly all of their shows feature amazing, detailed costumes and masks, and use a minimal amount of speech. For this reason, it is the ideal theatre to visit if you do not speak Polish.

KTO Theatre
This alternative theatre company specializes in open air theatre and street performances, and incoporates a lot of movement into their works. Speech is scarce in their productions, making them universal, and they rely instead on gesture, dance, expression and often musical accompaniment. They are a major contributer to Krakow’s summer arts festivals.

Teatr Stary
This grand art nouveau theatre is the oldest in Poland, and though it has been remodelled many times, it is still one of the most impressive and prestigious venues in the country. They offer a wide range of productions each season, focusing on traditional drama repertoire, but branching out to more avant-garde works as well as some dance performances. It also includes a small musuem on the lower level.
