Coffeeshops
Why deny? Many tourists arrive to Leiden and the Netherlands in order to use soft drugs legally. Although no one will arrest you and charge you with a criminal record if you use soft drugs, there are still a few restrictions regarding that matter. The only places allowed to sell soft drugs are coffee shops and the maximum amount you are allowed to have is 30 grams.
Menus on the wall and stands on the table, list the prices per gram of the different varieties. The same waitress who pours the coffee often does the actual selling of the drugs. Some outlets have a special counter where hash is cut from large blocks and weighed while you wait. Coffee shops may not admit anyone under 18 and alcohol is not permitted. They must also ensure that hard drugs are not sold or used on the premises.
Leiden
Leidseplein
Just round the corner from the Pieterskerk, Leidesplein is a clean, light and airy coffeeshop, clearly a popular place. Recommended for a drop in, but not for a long session.
Double A
To find this coffeeshop, find either the Molenmuseeum (Windmill Museum), or the big square that is Beestenmarkt itself. Both are within 5 minutes'' walk of Leiden''s combined train/bus station, and Nieuwe Beestenmarkt is the wide street that connects the two. Double A itself is a very comfortable and decent place: nice wooden carved panels to stare blankly at when you''re floating off somewhere, video games, decent staff, and all in all, a very good spot to while away an afternoon
Opening times:
