Transportation
Leiden is conveniently located in the political, cultural and economic heart of the Netherlands, which has an excellent public transportation system by train or bus. It is also possible to rent a car at the International airport or at the large cities and drive to Leiden.
by air
There is no airport in Leiden itself, but the main international airport of Holland Schiphol Airport, is just a 15 minutes drive away. Many direct flights to European and non-European destinations depart daily from Schiphol Airport. There are also some smaller airports in the Netherlands: Maastricht-Aachen Airport and Rotterdam Airport. Flights to some popular European destinations depart from these smaller airports. More information about the airports, flight schedules and destinations can be found on their websites:
Schiphol Airport: www.schiphol.nl
Maastricht Airport: www.maa.nl
Rotterdam Airport: www.rotterdam-airport.nl
by train
Centraal Station Leiden
The Netherlands is well known for its excellent railways. Leiden has a main train station named ’Leiden Centraal’ which is located in the centre of town. The train can bring you to cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht within forty minutes, and it is just a short 10-minutes ride to The Hague, the governmental centre of the Netherlands where the International Court of Justice is also located. Throughout the week, night trains may also reach these cities. From Leiden there are frequent and direct trains to Schiphol Airport, which take only fifteen minutes.
International trains - There are good international train connections between the Netherlands and neighbouring countries such as Belgium, France and Germany. For more information about international train connections, contact the Dutch Railway Company by telephone number: 0900-9296 (€ 0.35 per minute).
Although driving a car to get around the Netherlands can be very convenient, driving a car in Leiden and finding a parking space, can be very complicated. This is the case in most cities in the Netherlands, where there are many narrow and one-way streets. Parking space in Leiden is limited and expensive. That is why you will see so many Dutch riding their bikes.
