Portuguese drink coffee at any time of day and also at the end of every meal. You will find many cafes all around the city filled with locals that enjoy a nice cup of coffee and a pastry in the sun. The Portuguese have a sweet tooth and in most cafes there is a nice variety of pastries and cakes. The local traditional pastry is Pasties de nata, which is a custard filled tart.
The strength of coffee in Portugal is much stronger than in most other countries and the variety of hot drinks is beyond large. A small black coffee is called Bica, Expresso or Cafe. A double black coffee is called Bica Dupla, coffee with hot milk is called Cafe com Leite Apart, a coffee milkshake is Batido de Cafe and a Cappucino is a small black coffee served with whipped cream or with foamed milk.
