Restaurants
It is unlikely that you will be starving in Lisbon. The city is packed with an impressive range of high quality restaurants for any budget and from traditional Portuguese cuisine to international restaurants. Many of the restaurants will serve you starters of cheese, olives and bread as you take a seat. Keep in mind that you will be charged for everything you eat and the starters are not served for free.
If you are interested in seafood restaurants, it is best to head to Rua das Portas de Santo Antao. For international cuisine, go to Doscas or to the Parque Das Nacoes area and the largest variety of restaurants is located at Bairro Alto district.
Dinner is served relatively late and never before 9 pm. In the district of Bairro Alto restaurants stay open until around 2 am. Most restaurants are closed on either Sunday or Monday.
Portuguese cuisine
For a relatively small country, Portugal has a large and varied gastronomy. The Portuguese cuisine is completely different from that of other European countries, even though many confuse it with the Spanish cuisine. Due to the fact that Portugal was isolated from the rest of Europe for many years and the tradition of voyages to East Indies and the Far East was very common, there are many foreign influences that merged into the very special Portuguese cuisine. Peri-peri, a Brazilian spice transplanted to the former African colonies is used to flavour chicken and shrimp. Curry spices from Goa are common seasonings.
The Estremadura region that includes Lisbon is famous for its sea food and fish dishes. The good Portuguese food is made out of simple ingredients and is based on regional products such as fish, meat, olive oil, tomato and spices.
Wine is an essential part of any Portuguese meal and there is a choice of over a dozen major regional wines. Portuguese wines are often of high standard and are worldwide recognized.
