Culture
When it comes to culture London is as diverse as a city can be. The cultural choices are broad and range from classical music, dance and theatre performances to musicals, exhibitions and festivals, ect. The diversity of nationalities living in London shaped the cultural world and makes an easy definition almost impossible. London has five professional symphony orchestras, different chamber orchestras, as well as many concert halls such as the famous Royal Festival Hall in the South Bank Centre and the Royal Albert Hall. The Royal Opera House at Covent Garden hosts the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet companies. Another famous opera is the English National Opera.
Over 300 art galleries offer stunning cultural activities and fine art for nearly every taste und interest. Some big galleries such as the National Gallery, which displays over 2000 west European paintings, and the National Portrait Gallery reflect the history of the British state and its culture. The collecting of artefacts over many centuries brought Britain some of the best museums in the world. Visitors are often overwhelmed by the abundance of information and breathtaking cultural offer. Most of the museums even have a free admission so that art lovers can enjoy without limit.
London’s cultural scene has more than 150 theatres, more than 20 plays opening every week and more than 400 years of theatre tradition, so that the metropolis can be considered to be the world’s theatre capital. Beside the big theatres such as the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, many small theatres, clubs and pubs offer a programme of experimental and innovative theatre performances. Cultural life in London can be experienced by day and by night. The “Half Price Ticket Booth” on Leicester Square sells tickets for half the price on day of performance (Mo – Sat 2.30 pm – 6.30 pm).
