Cafés and bars are great places to hang out and people-watch in Madrid and places where you can really get a feel for the city. There are numerous cafés all over town, a variety of establishments each with their own kind of atmosphere. It is common to stop in for a quick coffee or tea, but also to linger and chat over drinks and snacks. Many cafés serve meals, usually light fare, but others double as restaurants. Madrid is famous for its bars, and no other city in Spain has this many bars to choose from, or the same kind of lively nightlife scene. Many bars are tapas bars, where you have a variety of traditional snacks to choose from to go with your drinks. There are all manner of other drinking establishments too, including chic cocktail bars, “tabernas,” trendy student bars and even Irish pubs. Tapas bars typically close earlier than other ones, usually around midnight. Others stay open well into the night.
