Madrid has a very vibrant cultural life, and is particularly known for its art scene. The city has museums, art collections and galleries that rank among the finest in the world, and there are dozens of good exhibitions every year. The areas of music and theatre are no less active, and there is always a wide range of performances on any given night, due to the city’s numerous different theatre companies, opera companies and dance troupes. Of course most plays are done in Spanish, but there are now a few theatres belonging to English-speaking companies. In addition to traditional plays, Madrid has an ongoing tradition of alternative theatre, featuring a wide range of sketches, satires and children’s shows. There are also several good cinemas in the city, many of which show the films in their original languages. The best way to check out all the cultural events in the city is to pick up a copy of Guía del Ocio, the arts newspaper found at all newsstands throughout Madrid. At most major hotels, you can ask the concierge to get you tickets to specific concerts or plays, but you will be charged extra. It is better to just go to the box office of whatever organization is putting on the show.
