Madrid has one of the most active nightlife scenes in the world, and is famous as a festive party city throughout Europe. On weekends as well as during holidays it is common to see almost as many people out between 4 am - 6 am as are on the streets during the day in more sedate cities. Everyone will find something in Madrid’s nightlife that attracts them, regardless of age, taste, and budget. Most of the major clubs are located on the Gran Vía and the Paseo Castellano, but there are hundreds all over the city. Clubs usually open between midnight and 1 am, and stay open most of the night. Most will charge between € 5 - 15 at the door. It is common for bars to function as cafés during the day, and switch over to serving only drinks later on. Popular nightlife neighbourhoods include the areas around Santa Ana and Huertas. Especially in the summer, these streets are full of fun things to do at all hours of the night. Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Paja are full of cool and trendy bars, most of which serve tapas, and there are also some restaurants around here open very late. Areas popular with artists and those seeking something a bit off the beated path are the La Latina and Lavapiés neighbourhoods. The gay scene is centered around the Chueca, and has some very fun and stylish bars, clubs and cafés. There are also many venues for late-night concerts, theatre, movies, and dance. Flamenco performances are very popular here, and can be found in many different kinds of venues.
